Boston Dynamics does not publish a universal price for Spot, Stretch, or Atlas, so the real cost is a configuration-specific sales quote. Buyers must budget for hardware, software, maintenance, accessories, and operational downtime—not just the robot. The company's current sales pages direct prospective buyers to contact sales. Here, "robot cost" means the complete acquisition and operating budget required for a usable deployment.

Why published price examples can mislead

Publicly documented figures usually describe a specific package, not a standard robot. A May 2025 U.S. Department of Homeland Security market survey lists the Spot Public Safety Kit at a $250,000 MSRP.

That figure should not be treated as Spot's current base price. It applies to a named public-safety configuration and does not establish what every buyer will pay. Request a quote that separates these items: This breakdown makes competing configurations easier to compare. It also prevents a low hardware subtotal from hiding recurring or deployment-specific expenses.

How optional hardware changes the Spot budget

A functional Spot deployment may require more than the quadruped robot. Boston Dynamics offers optional arms, sensor payloads, charging docks, and partner solutions, so two Spot quotes can differ substantially without either being incorrect. The right hardware depends on the job. Inspection work may require specialized sensors, while manipulation tasks need an arm.

Autonomous, repeated operation may justify a dock. Boston Dynamics says the Spot Dock recharges the robot in roughly two to three hours. Buyers should compare that charging interval with the planned work cycle, then decide whether the site needs additional docks or batteries. Ask the vendor to identify every component by name and quantity. A quote should also state which accessories receive the same service coverage as the robot.

Which software is included—and which is separate?

boston dynamics says Spot software upgrades remain free for the robot's life, according to its public-safety webinar. Support packages remain a separate expense, however, and that statement does not establish free access to Orbit or third-party software. Orbit is a separate fleet-management offering. It supports autonomous-task management, remote operation, facility-map data analysis, and connections with enterprise systems.

Its terms calculate service credits as percentages of the quarterly subscription fee, but they do not provide a universal subscription price. Those Orbit terms also exclude scheduled maintenance and upgrades from Cloud Orbit downtime. Customers must submit an availability support request within 24 hours to qualify for a service credit. Before signing, establish which functions run on the robot and which depend on Orbit, cloud access, or partner software. Also document subscription terms, integration work, renewal pricing, and the process for reporting outages.

What maintenance coverage does—and does not—buy

Spot Care adds a variable service expense based on the selected coverage level. Boston Dynamics' Spot Care terms describe a one-year coverage period, software updates, support-center access, U.S. domestic round-trip repair shipping, and expected repairs within 10 business days. An expected repair time is not the same as uninterrupted availability.

A single-robot operation may still face a meaningful gap while equipment is shipped and repaired. Boston Dynamics' Spot Care overview says batteries, chargers, and tablets are not automatically covered. Buyers should therefore reserve money for accessory failures even when robots, arms, payloads, docks, or stations have coverage. Confirm the serial-numbered equipment covered by each agreement. Then ask how accidental damage, consumable components, replacement batteries, international shipping, and loaner equipment are handled.

Stretch and Atlas require different operating plans

Stretch Care includes technical support, field service, repairs, software updates, scheduled maintenance, and site health checks. Boston Dynamics also requires Stretch to connect periodically to the internet so it can send diagnostic data. That requirement affects sites with restricted networks. Buyers should resolve connectivity, security, and diagnostic-data procedures before deployment rather than treating them as post-purchase details.

Atlas is an enterprise humanoid, not a consumer purchase. Its January 2026 specification sheet lists four hours of battery life, falling to two hours during heavy lifting, plus 110-volt charging. The same specification sheet describes modular, field-replaceable components and customer self-repair certification. An Atlas operating plan should therefore account for charging schedules, spare modules, technician certification, and the staffing needed to perform approved field repairs.
